di_stanza is an extensive series of thousands of drawings arranged as a wall grid, each responding to the feeling of displacement through gestures of repetition and failure as acts of survival and escapism.
every piece emerges from a rehearsal-like process that attempts to reproduce the canonical gesture of underpainting, but on the reverse side of a customized canvas, previously treated with an imprimatura emulsion and manganese oxide.
both materials, like the technique itself, are deliberately misused.
through the repeated execution of the same gesture, ever-changing patterns from infested beehive frames appear on paper sheets, later enriched with pencil interventions, made of subsequent thin lines.  the whole design emerged during a three months residency in leipzig (pilotenkuece, de), while facing the covid restrictions arisen in saxony at that time. all the organic materials were sourced thanks to a serendipitous encounter with beekeeper albert operating in the same neighbourood (lindenau) materials: infested honeycombs / bespoke old linen canvas processed with managanese oxide / skin rabbit glue / hahnemühle acid free cotton paper 325 gsm, measurements: dimensions_ 20×20 cm each item + expanded editions 40*40 cm curator: bob swearingin supported by: MIC – ministero della cultura, direzione generale creatività contemporanea, comune di castelnuovo porto, città metropolitana di roma, associazione DIECIQUINDICI curator: michela becchis artistic direction: michela becchis, manuela de leonardis, elisabetta portoghese, marianna fazzi photography: matilde cenci visual editor catalogue: simone d’angelo videomaker: andrea arena press office: sara taormina
